This chapter focuses on the importance of productivity as a part of growth in GDP, the somewhat obvious idea that you can’t consume something that was never produced, thus consumption is tied directly to productivity. How does that concept support national subsidies in education and health? How about infrastructure?
Population growth tends to be a “hot topic”. What are the negatives associated with additional population growth? What are the positives? (In terms of growth in GDP). Where do you fall in the discussion? Why?
Higher education, health, and nutrition has been shown to lead to higher productivity levels. As nutrition improves, so does workers productivity. As workers have the nutrition and health care they need, they can reach a higher living potential in which they are thriving and able to focus their time on productive output. Insufficient caloric intake substantially reduces the work effort they could put forth. With proper health care and regular checkups, workers can live longer, less time off for illness, less worrying about health, and ultimately produce more.
Education has shown a strong correlation to economic productivity. As workers gain knowledge in education, they can research new ways to solve problems. Innovation is the key to our solving our toughest problems. Every generation before us has had to solve tough problems and an educated population continues to come up with the solutions.
As our global population grows we will be force to innovate in many ways. I strongly believe we can and will. Hans Rosling wrote a great book called Factfullness in which he discusses how the developing of African nations will be a great thing for the world. He predicts that as Africa develops families will decide to have less children and the world should stabilize at around 11 billion. I think the developing nations educating their populations and especially their women, will lead to a balance in human population. Couple that with the fact that we will be forced to innovate to produce the amount of food, other consumable items, deal with the trash and waste, as well as spawn new industries to help us manage this population. With the advances in healthcare it will be reasonable to believe the average life expectancy will continue to rise as well. I believe our cities will get more dense and housing innovation in heavily populated areas like New York and Beijing will adapt to provide for the growing population.
I strongly believe we will continue to promote education, health, wellness, nutrition, etc to be able to handle a much larger population.
